With the costs of New GPS's so low, why doesn't Tom-tom offer map
upgrades at a reasonable price. Why spend 60 plus dollars for a map
upgrade when new units, with more features are only a few bucks more??

maps cost them peanuts, but its a good way of 'forcing' users to
upgrade their unit

Now that TomTom owns Tele Atlas, their marginal cost for sending an extra
copy of a map that is delivered by download is essentially zero.

Or as we in manufacturing call it, a dependable recurring revenue stream...

An interesting option is the map update service, which for a yearly
subscription fee, gives you the most up-to-date maps. I've been updating
every three years or so but am considering the subscription.

The marginal cost is completely irrelevant, what matters is the cost of the updating of the maps.

Careful, once they get your details, despite the fact that you have
paid for services, you will be bombarded with emails telling you that
you haven't.

Paid for the 'Safety Camera' updates and for the next month I was
being told that my subscription had run out
Likewise with the Map Update service, unfortunately this is only
'updated' 4 times in the year and so is more difficult to find out
which database is wrong.

A few fiery arrows where directed at them about this incompetence and
it supposedly has been brought to the attention of a board member (or
should that be bored member). I can't help wonder about how many
people pay for their services twice because of this incompetence
causing them to panic and instinctively pay once they get the email
telling them that specific services (that they have actually already
paid for) have run out. TomTom Home is almost as bad but seeing as it
is continually trying to download a map which is years old and failing
every time I'm now used to the incorrect details it displays.

Yes, but first you have to pay for the update service and then for the
updates. If Tom-Tom thinks that I'll pay those big bucks for map
updates, they're wrong. I've got a two yr old device and will upgrade
for more features with another company i.e. Garmin.
