I spent one afternoon trying to update via the 'lifetime updater', and it
never did make it. Finally, I opted for the 'one time' selection, and it
went smoothly. Just saying...next time I'll skip the 'lifetime updater' and
go strait to the alternate.

That's exactly my experience as well.

My brother really likes the lifetime updater because it tells him when a new
map version is available for download.

Mine 2 updated fine using the Lifetime Updater.

I updated two Apple macs and my Nuvi using lifetime updater. Everything just
worked.
