For whatever reason, for one of my favorite addresses , my Nuvi 350
wants to take me through a street that dead ends against a train track. I
think ages ago, the street used to cross the train tracks, but no more....

Can I modify the route (like adding a detour) permanently and save it that
way?

No, the maps can't be edited, and there's no way to tell the Nuvi to avoid
it. You didn't say which version map you're using but City Navagator North
America 2008 is the latest.

Can I create a two - section route and "paste" them together from A to B the
from B to C?

Sort of. The Nuvi allows one "via" in your current destination. You would
first select Go to B and then Go to A. When you select Go to A it will ask
you if you want it to be your new destination or a via. Select via. You
will then be routed from current position to A and then to B.

You can only have one via per destination.

You cannot edit or change the mapping data, and the nuvi does not do
routes, it will only go to a favorite and let you add one stop en route
to a favorite.

So I you may be able to correct this by having another favorite that is
in a location near the favorite address. The second favorite would have
to be located in a direction, relative to the favorite, that resulted in
travel from there to the favorite not involving the dead end street.

Then you could activate a route to the favorite address, then add the
second diversionary address to the route, and it would not use the dead
end street.

Or you could just remember to go around the block or whatever to get
around the dead end street when going to your favorite address.

You cannot do that. The nuvi will only save favorites and those only
represent a single location.

You can't. As I said, the Nuvi 2x0, 3x0, and 6x0 don't do routes.
