At the November 9 meeting of the National Space-Based Position
Navigation and Timing (PNT) Advisory Board, Javad Ashjaee, president and
CEO of JAVAD GNSS, demonstrated his company’s newly developed filter
technology proposed to protect GPS receivers from LightSquared broadband
network interference. In a December 8 GPS World webinar, Ashjaee gives
this presentation for GPS World's web audience, and answers questions
from the magazine's survey editor, Eric Gakstatter.

The webinar will begin at 10 a.m. Pacific and 1:00 p.m. Eastern Standard
Time.

The JAVAD GNSS proposed fix consists, in simplified form, of a ceramic
filter followed by a series of surface acoustic wave (SAW) filters. Mr.
Ashjaee will explain how it works, and show some test results. Mr.
Gakstatter will provide further commentary and questions. We will also
take questions from the web audience.

Don't forget there are amplifiers in that filtering chain. So is this
actually a filter or a new receiver front end?

And did I see reference to a patent pending on that topology of
cascaded filters and amplifiers? Today, almost anything is patentable
so will anyone employing filters exhibiting individual shape factors
that are isolated by active components need to license that concept
from Javad?

Like I've never seen this concept before! I once built a RIAA phono
preamp that did just that.

So, it's not clear how Garmin, Rockwell Collins and the other
suppliers of certified avionics can implement the Javad 'filter' into
their products.

And I'll remind you all again, the Javad concept does not allow for
operation of the upper LTE network channel. Lightsquared still
insists they will activate that in a few years. Until someone designs
receivers that work when both LTE channels are on, nothing has been
solved.

And, even if operation on the upper channel is forever taken of the
table as proposed by RTCA, the interference problem isn't solved until
a sunset date is set for retrofit/replacement of all those 'defective'
fielded receivers.

I'd recommend Javad keep a businesslike relationship with those
Lightsquard rogues and refrain from expressing his 'love affair' with
them.
