I bought my Start 20 from Amazon. So it'll be fairly up-to-date, yes?

I really don't need the hassle of upgrading the thing BEFORE I use it
for my all-important trip in two weeks. Given that Amazon must shift
dozens of these a week, I'd assume the software is fairly up-to-date.
Am I wrong?

Yeah, specially given that you cant currently back it up and its one
of the smaller memory models which can be an upgrade hassle.

Really depends on what size batches Amazon buys them in.

Not really feasible to know that.

You can manually compare the version with whats currently available.

The updates arent normally critical, particularly if you arent planning
to head into or thru an area where the roads have seen significant
recent construction etc.

I wouldnt risk it upgrade wise myself.

I don't know whether you are in the UK like me, but I reckon I could
get to Leominster from Lincolnshire with five year old maps quite
easily!

Different probably if I was planning on several trips to the centre of
large cities, but (thankfully) I'm not.

Re that upgrade, is there a way of getting the TT device to tell me
what version/date of the software/maps it has loaded?

Nope, Australia.

Yeah, thats what I meant. You can see a problem with major
highway rebuilding etc and the other thing that can be a problem is
with roads that are now one way that werent etc but it isnt common.

Yep. Tap on the little step display of the satellites it can see in the
bottom right corner of the display. That shows a vertical column of
stuff with the battery status at the top. another bar chart of the
satellites it can see, and down the bottom of that a version number.
If you tap on the version number, you get a full screen of version
numbers of the various stuff, the map version and the software version.

If the Start 20 doesnt do it like that, the manual will tell you how to
get that screen and the web site does too.

Map version (UK & Rep of Eire): 865.3243

That seems to be Feb or Mar 2011. I've definitely seen a 865.3254
mentioned on the web.

It doesn't matter how long it's sat at Amazon, what matters is what
firmware / software is on them from the factory.

Generally, any device I receive has already needed a firmware or
software update out of the box.

Yeah, mine was dated March 2011, I updated it and now it's dated
October. MyTomTom says it's up-to-date, yet it doesn't recognise speed
limit and speed camera changes that were implemented at least six
months ago.

TomTom are notoriously slow at updating - both new road and speed
cameras/limits. I have known them take over 1 year to update their
maps with a new bypass!

For really up-to-date speed cameras, try "pocketgpsworld.com" -
for a miselry £19.00 per annum they issue weekly updates to their camera
database - I've been using them in preference to TomTom for 3 years now
and have never found an error. If you report a new fixed camera and it
is verified correct, then you get free membership for life!
