I have a Go 530T.

When not plugged into a power source, the battery lasts only approx. 1 hour
of continuous use.

Is this standard for this type of device or can I get and fit a longer
lasting battery (for walking etc)

Yes, it isn't really aimed at portable use.

You can buy USB battery chargers.

Nope, my 710 does a lot better than that.

You can obviously power it with an external
battery that simulates the car battery.

You can turn it off when you dont actually need directions too, it will
pickup fine when turned on again later when you need directions etc.

There are plenty of cellphones with GPS built in now too like the Nokia N96 etc.
The batterys in those last for days.

Not when the screen is on and GPS in use.

When it was new my TomTom One would last around 4 hours from a full
charge, 2½ years later it's down to less than 2 hours. There are
external battery packs from for example
http://www.tangshop.com/universal-ex...-powerbox.html.

Try googling for "external battery usb" and you will find this and many
more.
I don't think there will be any option for fitting an internal battery
that's any bigger

You dont need the screen on when listening to the directions.
