Backing up One 130 to thumb drive

Just did my first backup on my new ONE 130, getting ready to buy and
download the map for Australia. But... I recall somewhere, reading about
how to set up to backup and restore to a thumb drive instead of the HDD.
I'll be heading to Oz in a few weeks, but have need for the USA map
before flying out. I'll be stopping at my brother's before heading to
the airport, wanted to do the swap there. But now I can't remember where
I found the instructions for setting up a flash drive. I've looked
through the PDF manual that came with it, as well as searching TomTom
support trying several search strings, but cannot find the info.

Can I just copy all the TomTom data folders to the thumb drive and
change where it looks for them? I do recall from the directions I read,
that it didn't seem the most intuitive process. Given how maps are
locked to the device, and not knowing just how this is accomplished, I'm
reluctant to mess around with this without having some idea what I'm doing.

Thanks,

Jon

Yup, u can copy all the data to any drive u wish on pc, either

That is hwo I do it. I just plug in my Tomtom, go to the TomTom "drive"
and copy everything I find there to somewhere else. However I do have
one with an SD card, so what I also do is just copy all the content from
that and put it on an other SD card and overwrite that.

For a backup:
Use Windows Explorer and copy the entire TT to your flash drive.
TT Home does not make a complete backup; navcore (OS) is not copied. If you
copy F: (or whatever is shown as your TT drive in WE) to your flash drive
(or PC) you will have a fully restorable copy.

Thanks all, but this looks like the ticket. So I could put the whole
thing with my USA map in a folder called USA, set up with the Australia
map, and repeat putting everything an Aus folder?

TomTom says that newly purchased maps MUST be backed up before they can
be reloaded again. Is that just when using the HOME software, or is
there something that is set during the backup process that cements
validation of the map to the particular device?

If it's just as you describe, that's a piece of cake!

Thank you,

Jon

I'm pretty sure that is the case.
(I'll soon find out with the S.Africa map on my XL One.)

It is only (probably) your Device ID, ten characters long and can be found
by pressing bottom LH corner of screen then press 'version'.
If TomTom say to backup then do it (their way).
If your TT uses a memory card then, I think you can have different maps on
different cards and just use whichever is appropriate to the country(ies)
you are in. I base this on the fact the latest Western & Central Europe
offering exceeds 2 GB so TomTom offer a smaller product (probably only
excludes ALG and IQ Routes?) that will fit (or can be purchased) on a 2GB SD
card.
Just checked TomTom's website, no mention of memory cards or internal memory
capacity, so if your TT has sufficient internal memory just create a full
backup to your PC using Windows Explorer then add the extra map(s) directly
under root (again using WE). If there's not enough internal space you'll
just have to delete one map in order to copy in the next.

I dont think the 'validation' is done during backup .. I think it is
done when you install the maps to the unit.
And I am pretty sure that all is tied in togethewr when u upgrade the
maps

Jon.

Everything related to a specific map (including POIs) is stored into the map
folder. You don't need any additional files.

If your device has enough "disk" space left or if it has SD card slot, you
might even have both maps at the same time, then switch from one to the
other via config menus.

I've downloaded, installed, and backed up my Australia map, now want to
get everything on the flash drive. Are there any files/folders that need
to be backed up specific to the Australia map data besides the maps and
Australia folders? What I want is to have all Australia specific data in
one folder on the thumb drive, all USA specific data in another, and
everything else in a TT folder (backing up the OS being the primary concern)

Having coughed up $85 for the Australia map, just want to make sure I
don't shoot myself in the foot here by doing something wrong or
overlooking something.

I suppose too, I could just copy -everything- to the Oz folder, restore
the USA map, and repeat, then changing would be a simple matter of
deleting everything on my TT and copying the contents of the folder
appropriate to the map I want to use?

Thanks,

Jon
