> on July 19 NOAA will begin the process of validating the accuracy of gravimetric
> geoid models, specifically those using data from the GRAV-D (Gravity for
> the Redefinition of the American Vertical Datum) campaign.

> Tests performed over an approximate eleven-week summer schedule will involve
> a comprehensive survey along a 300 km transect from Corpus Christi to Austin, Texas.
> Measurement techniques to be collected include geodetic leveling, multi-receiver
> campaign style long session GPS, astro-geodetic deflections of the vertical using
> the Swiss DIADEM camera, RTN-based GPS, absolute gravity, gravity
> gradients, LIDAR and imagery.

> Through these various measurements, this survey will provide two independent
> determinations of the shape of the geoid that can be used to evaluate the accuracy
> of gravimetric geoid models.The comparisons will provide a test and calibration
> for the data used to create the next generation vertical datum.
