I'd like something that doesn't rely on data....particularly when
abroad! No TomTom for Android....yet or ever?

I'm wondering whether anybody has devised a way to cache all
Google Maps maps for a certain area in advance. I think that
would be a clever solution.

By the way, install Google My Tracks too. It allows you to
record tracks and, among other formats, export them in GPX
format.

Yep. And the best way to use the most up to date data too.

Or MapDroyd, my personal favourite.

Do you remember the name of the program?

Its not a program, its just how google maps is used.

After some software testing I can give a few tentative
recommendations. I haven't been able to test anything very
thoroughly, so please take these with a grain of salt.

The main application is, of course, Google Maps, which since
yesterday's update can navigate even for pedestrians. Some kinks
still need ironing out, but so far it already looks good.

Then there is Navigation, Google's classic program for the
purpose. I'm not sure whether that will be replaced, but
currently it is still the choice for normal car navigation.

When you can't have a data connection, "Map (-)" is a program
that can fetch and use maps from three different sources,
including Google Maps. It puts them on the SD card.

The catch is that the program cannot do what Google Maps can do,
particularly routing. And, since Google Maps are mostly or
usually bitmaps, they take a lot of space. But still it serves a
purpose.

Then there is MapDroyd, a program that uses Open Street Maps.
The catch here is that these maps are badly incomplete. But as
far as the maps go, the program is well-designed and works well.

A totally different animal is Google's Latitude. Have a good
look at it---it can help relations with family and friends.

There are several programs on the market that promise to provide
more and different GPS functions, but I have not yet tested any
of them.
