I need to ask for a little help....

A friend asked me to take a look at a 300r gps he just bought used as he
cannot get it to work...

I looked at it, I'm not familiar with Garmin, but it seems pretty straight
forward...

The map seems fine, it lets you pick locations, etc..

But it is stuck on the wrong starting point.. it thinks we're somewhere in
CT.. no matter what new destination I enter....

It does seem to look for the satellites.. but settles on the same wrong
location....

????

do I do a reset/reformat of internal memory??? Is it worse???

thanks!

If you can't first figure out that the word "magellan" in the newsgroup
title means it is NOT a Garmin group.......then there probably isn't much
anybody can do to help.

If it doesn't "know" where you are then it is not finding (enough)
satellites.

First, sorry for the typo - I was probably thinking of my own Garmin. As
you point out, this is a Magellan newsgroup and I am indeed referring to the
Magellan RoadMate 300r...I hope you'll let me slide....

As for finding satellites, how many does it need to find? I am in Central
NJ, and my Garmin and Toyota NAV systems have no problems at all..

The 300r seems to think I am at a Mall, upstate CT....????

Thank you....

A minimum of 3; the more the better.
Not familiar with the Roadmate series; others have a status display
somewhere indicating how many birds it can hear.
A visit to the Magellan website might be in order. Might be a downloadable
usr's manual there:
http://www.magellangps.com/support/

A hard RESET might get things going again.

Roadmate users should be along shortly.

Thank you!

The more I think of it, the more I'd like to try the hard reset.. but, to be
on the safe side, I'd do it without the SD/map card in.....internal memory
only, is about all I see on the menu......

I got it going... all set.. reformated the internal memory, found the
missing sound files on the net...

All works... it does seem to take a while to find satellites.... other than
that, it does what it is supposed to do..I'll give it back to my friend..
he's good to go....
